Marine Energy Management

make the world a better place with a bit of optimization

We at Marorka proudly support this newly founded Marine Energy Management community. At times when the marine industry is faced with challenges due to higher fuel prices and increased environmental concern, we see this forum as a great venue to exchange thoughts on the topics closest to our heart. We have been focusing on the topic of optimising fuel consumption on ships for more than a decade now and we would like to contribute to an online community with people sharing our interests.

Cheers,
Kristinn

Kristinn,

Given the interest developing regarding LNG fuel onboard, how will that affect the body of data collected on conventionally fueled vessels?

Hi John,

First welcome to www.marineenergymanagment.com! Great to see you here.

In my view I feel that data collected and knowledge compiled from the data from conventionally fuel vessels will prove invaluable when developing and introducing LNG fuel. The operation profile of your vessels will still be the same and also you will have the same challenges for managing on what you are using the fuel. Topics like speed selection, combination of energy systems running etc. will still be the same.

I feel that the data from existing ships with conventional diesel cycle engines and conventional fuel can and should be used in the dialogue for the development regarding LNG.

I had presentation at a Motor Ship conference back in November 2006 where I can remember quite an interesting presentation from Tomas Aminoff from Wartsila in Finland regarding installation of LNG on a ferry. I have in my notes that he talked about at that time possible savings of 5.3% but a increased investment cost of approx 1 million Euro. I haven't followed price changes since then but the environmental factor is still there.

Cheers,
Kristinn
