Hi Eric I think I need to add that there is a bit more to what an energy consultant actually does for a living. Checking that plant and equipment is switched off is one of the jobs he has to do however as you point out most ‘energy…

Dear Eric I read with interest your comments, in particular ‘ they travel on either one of two path’. There is a further path / option that one can travel down and that is ‘real’ energy efficiency.  The field of energy…

Dear Martin Greetings this wondeful concept of WASTE heat utilization at higher and even lower temperatures is not inspiring the ship owners due to high cost of installations. I wish the complete engine room can be air conditioned with the main…

Thank you very much Mr. Kristinn. So far I know there are two cooling cycle in the engine, and the high temperature cooling cycle is enclosed with special chemicals(?? ) to provide corrosion free environment for the engine body. The sea water works…

Air Source Heat Pumps

The latest renewable technology on the market that everyone is getting excited about is ASHP’s or ground source heat pumps. Although not strictly a renewable energy there are certain benefits to be had when installing one of these ASHP’s as you don’t have to rely on the sun shining or the wind blowing and will operate 24/7.An ASHP can provide cooling and heating and has a COP of 2-3 depending on ambient conditions. This means that for every unit of energy we put in we are getting 2-3 units out.…See More

Hi Rubina, Since ships are of different sizes and surf different needs there is no general rule in engine types. You could generalize by saying that larger ocean going vessels are operating with slow speed two stroke diesel engines (around 100…

this has been a good idea. I am trying to focus on using all possible waste heat source in a ship and provide desalinated water. I do not have much info about a ship's different working systems; what type of engine is used and what kind of heat…

I spent a number of years working as an engineer in the merchant navy. For the past 12 years I have been working as an consultant carrying out industrial and commercial energy audits throughout Europe.
Great website. I have spent a considerable amount of time looking for energy efficiency information on the web for marine applications and have not come up with much. Nice to know that there is others out there with the same views.

Performance benchmarks

Does anyone have performance benchmarks for different types of merchant ships?. Is there anyone out there specialising in this area and if so what is the accepted method (calculation) that you/they are using. I have read that IMO are working on a carbon performance index but not finalised yet. If this info is out there could you please let me know as I am working on a project at the moment and any help would be appreciated.
Many thanks

Great to have you on board.
This site was deployed to fill the gap you mention. If you have some other sites, articles or insight to share please write a blog or create a thread in the forums.
It would also be interesting to hear more about your process and interesting results of your audits.

Shaun,

Currently were are doing US Flag vessels. It has been a mixture of reasons for them to request these audits. The two big reasons is the cost of fuel these days and the impending regulatory issues.

We are currently doing both onboard audits and working with firms to review new builds. Also we are working with firms on re-engineering of older vessels.
