make the world a better place with a bit of optimization

Simple and effective measures at Solstad

Identifying energy saving measures and incentives play a key role in the simple but effective strategy implemented at Solstad.

They have a special section on their website outlining their green operations.

In it's simplest form they have identified energy saving measures carried out by the captain, including:

  • Anchoring: if idle and weather and water depth allows it.
  • Drift: if idle or standby, instead of running in DP mode where anchoring is not possible.
  • Reduced transit speed: plan voyage better, adapt speed to required ETA by coordinating with charterer.
  • Green DP: reduce use of thrusters and/or reduce gain on DP to allow for drift.
  • Stop main engines: reduce the number of running main engines to fit the actual need.
  • Optimise trim: for better fuel economy when steaming.
  • Reduce electrical consumption: switch off deck floodlights and other electrical equipment when not needed.

So every time the captain executes one of the above measures, it is registered as a fuel reducing operation. And the numbers speak for themselves:

Once again, a new quarterly record for registered SGO’s has been achieved this quarter. A total of 3,158 fuel reducing operations has been registered. The reported estimated fuel saving was 7,757 m3 which gives a fuel saving estimate of 17% of the total fleet fuel con

The average fuel consumption used per vessel per day is now just under 11 m3 whereas before the campaign was launched the corresponding consumption was about 13.2 m3 per vessel.  This is a considerable improvement!

A real fuel saving of this size means 21,000 tons of reduced CO2emission and about 40 million NOK in fuel cost savings this quarter. We also expect this to result in 3-5 million NOK in maintenance savings.
